Addressing Your Depression
30th June 2010 by Depressed No CommentsDepression is a serious condition that affects millions of Americans. This is a condition that will lead a person to disruption in their life. It can interfere with their family life, their work and their own sense of self.
There are a few things that you need to know when it comes to dealing with the problems that depression can cause in a person’s life. One of the biggest of these is that it’s not just a problem that “in your head”. Depression is a condition which can have a detrimental effect on the way that your whole body functions.
You should also be aware of the fact that there are different types of depression and they are all manifested in different ways. There is however certain traits that are common to all forms of depression and you should know how to be on the lookout for these traits for yourself or the ones that you love.
The exact causes of depression remain a mystery. We do know that it has a lot to do with a chemical imbalance in the brain concerning a hormone family called MAOI’s. These chemicals are very delicately balanced and when one or more of them go out of balance then the condition of depression can occur. Many times the body is able to eventually adjust this balance on its own and a person will rise out of their depression. This is called mild depression. Other times when a person is suffering from deep or “clinical” depression, the body is not able to adjust and therefore the condition goes unchecked or in some cases gets worse.
In rare cases even clinical depression has the ability to go away on its own. While this is not the normal case and professional treatment is best, you can do some things to help reduce the impact that depression can have on your life.
One of the most common methods of dealing with depression is the use of antidepressants. These drugs, which can restore a balance to the MAOI activity in the patient’s brain, can do wonderful things to help them get their condition under control. You should be aware of the potential side effects however and use these drugs with caution. You should also make sure that you are working closely with your doctor to monitor your progress. These drugs are relatively new to the world of medicine and there is not exact science to their prescription. One patient may react in a totally different way to the same dosage of the same drug than another person.
Exercise is also a very effective method of dealing with depression. The reason for this is unclear, but the general belief is that endorphins which are released in the brain during exercise may have a natural balancing ability on the MAOI activity of the brain. It has been shown that regular exercise by people who are experiencing moderate to severe depression has reduced the manifestation of classic depression symptoms.
Counseling is a major factor in dealing with depression. In this case you are looking for the underlying cause of the emotional and chemical imbalance that has led to the depression condition in the person. Once this cause is addressed the person can start moving back into the world or normal living again.
It doesn’t matter what the base cause of the depression is you can get through this and get back to a normal life. There are many more methods that can be listed here that you can use to get to a point where you are in control of your depression and not that your depression is in control of you.
