The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to approve Paxil for use in children under the age of 18, this is mainly due to reports that the antidepressant causes suicide rates to increase in this age group. What the FDA has approved Paxil for is use by adults who are currently suffering from depression and various forms of panic attacks. There have been, however, several studies linking Paxil to Breast Cancer and also a rise in suicide rates as well in adults.

In a study completed by Ivar Aursnes and other Norwegian researchers and published in BMC Medicine on Aug. 22, 2005 it was found that Paxil, also known as paroxetine, was seen to be seven times more likely to cause suicidal tendencies in adults than the placebo in the study. It is found in the report saying: “Summarizing the suicide attempts, there are seven among the patients on paroxetine and one among the patients on placebo,” the report also states that 16 trails were done with 916 patients were placed on Paxil and 550 on the placebo.

The reaction of Paxil manufacturer (GlaxoSmithKline) was claiming that the the information given are “misleading”.GSK states that the data that was collected was “outdated” and incorrectly selected. The official view of GSK regarding the study states: “The company disagrees with the conclusion from the sub-analysis conducted by scientists based in Oslo.” “It serves only to cause confusion and unnecessary concern for patients using an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor,) such as paroxetine, for treatment of depression.”

The FDA has also begun its own investigation on the study and will take all available data from the study and see if Paxil will really cause these side effects. The FDA further goes on by saying that it may take a while for the analysis of the information to be completed as it would be cross referenced with current FDA data.

Paxil is one of the worlds leading prescription antidepressants, since its introduction to the markets in 1992 total sales of Paxil is in the billions. To date there have been many who have been led to file a Paxil Lawsuit against the manufacturer of Paxil. If you think your signs and symptoms of depressions are treatable by Zoloft, consult with your doctor as soon as possible.
