Depression must first be understood before it’s treated. Depression troubles 15 million Americans every year, it’s not a joke. The most difficult part of it is that about 2/3 of those people won’t seek treatment. Too many Americans are still tarnished by the age-old stereotype associated with any mental illness. Their character is so important that they don’t want a label like “crazy” to tarnish it. To treat depression first it has to be diagnosed. To be diagnosed, those that suffer have to seek assistance. That’s the terrible merry go round of depression.

Many factors lead to depression. Depression can be brought on by biological, emotional, environmental and physical factors . The genetic link cannot be ignored as well. Many diseases are passed on through a family. It’s not only genetics but how a family lives together. Living comes along with a lot of stress. For some there is a constant struggle to survive from week to week. For others there is that constant battle to perform satisfactory in a competitive society. Then there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with despair. The list goes on and on.

Depression is often hard to find in its early form. Someone you love may be suffering from this illness and you would find it hard to see obvious symptoms. Everyone fights some mild distress once in awhile. This is natural. Real depression is a lot more permanent and serious. When the symptoms begin to start taking over your life than the opportunity for early detection has been missed. Those suffering from depression tend to feel all alone and disgusted with life. They no longer recognize any hope for their life. Sleep habits and enjoyment from life no longer exist. Treatment is now needed before the illness worsens.

The afflicted needs a renewed sense of hope and meaning for an effective depression treatment. Psychotherapy often accomplishes this.  This treatment can take months or years to bring about positive results but it is effective. Doctors can also administer drugs such as Prozac or Paxil or other anti-depressants . These medicines are effective but they come with some side effects. There are also natural herbs that have been proven clinically to bring about positive results in treating depression as well. There are also many depression support groups geared towards working with depressed individuals. Consult a doctor if you or someone you know shows signs of depression.
