Can Popping a Pill Help You Stop Smoking?
8th May 2009 by Depressed No CommentsThere’s a wide array of products available that claim to help you stop smoking. The problem is, though, that smoking involves both psychological and physical dependency. That doubles the effort required to stop smoking. People have tried all sorts of treatments, from nicotine patches to laser to hypnosis, in an effort to kick the habit. All too often, however, people return to their old ways.
But there’s one product that seems to stand out from the others. It’s known as Chantix, and it’s a prescription quit smoking pill. It’s manufactured by Pfizer and approved by the FDA. When taking this medication, smokers stand a much better chance of quitting for good. Chantix utilizes a completely new approach towards fighting nicotine addiction that has shown highly promising results.
Before Chantix came on the market, doctors would frequently prescribe Buproprion to help smokers quit. This drug is more commonly known as Wellbutrin and is a popular antidepressant medication. Research on the effects of Wellbutrin showed that it was helpful in diminishing cravings in the brain’s nicotine receptors. The end result was that people felt less need to light up. Of course, that made it much easier for them to quit.
However, Wellbutrin is really meant to treat depression, not to curb cravings for nicotine. So researchers branched off onto related paths. They utilized what they had learned from the use of Wellbutrin as an aid to stop smoking.
The end result of all this research is a drug called Chantix. This new medication acts on nicotine receptors in a somewhat different way than Wellbutrin does. Chantix causes the release of small quantities of dopamine into the brain. Dopamine is a chemical produced in the brain which makes you feel good.
When this chemical works on the nicotine receptors, the brain believes that nicotine has been released into the bloodstream. Therefore, it doesn’t signal an urgent need for nicotine. This translates into less severe withdrawal symptoms for the smoker.
Perhaps you’ve tried every method available to help you quit smoking for good, with no success. If that’s the case, you might want to consider this latest prescription treatment. There are lots of success stories for this medication, and they have been generally achieved without discomfort. In order to obtain this medication, you’ll have to visit your doctor. That will be a perfect opportunity to learn more about the drug, its benefits and possible side effects. As well, you should do some research of your own.
