The Top 10 Symptoms of Stress

14th March 2010 by Depressed No Comments

The dangers of stress are something that many do not take fully into account when planning their lives? Mental and physical stress can affect people of all ages, from all walks of life. Stress causes depression, insomnia, panic attacks, and premature aging. Stress is a known contributor of the following; high blood pressure, circulatory problems, heart disease, impotence, and diabetes.

Stress management can take many forms. Spa treatments, such as facials, aromatherapy, and massages are traditional remedies for relieving stress and muscle tension. Meditation and yoga are becoming increasingly popular solutions for balancing the body and mind. Sufferers of stress often find that physical exercise, like running, kickboxing, martial arts, or cycling, can be helpful in relieving stress. Stress is something that is always going to hold you back so it is important that you find a way of keeping it under control.

A little stress is normal, and poses no risk to your health. Feel as though stress may be taking over? Look out for the following symptoms:

Trouble Sleeping: You lie awake at night, unable to sleep because your mind is consumed with anxious/worried thoughts. You find it almost impossible to get out of bed in the morning. You experience nightmares and disturbing dreams.

Depression: You've lost interest in activities that used to give you pleasure. You feel sad, worried, worthless, or guilty. Everything seems hopeless.

Eating: Your eating habits change and you eat either too much or not enough. You experience unexplained weight loss, or gain.

Fatigue: You never have enough energy. You feel weak or faint.

Lack of concentration: Simple tasks become difficult, you can't organise yourself and forget things. The short term memory is often affected by stress, and many find their concentration and focus start to wane.

Physical Pain: You have frequent or severe headaches, nausea, back pain, chest pain, or trouble breathing.

Skin and hair are often affected; symptoms include hair loss, rashes, itching, hives, and sores.

You experience sudden and dramatic mood swings and are often irritable.

Panic Attacks: You’ve experienced a sudden attack of intense fear, followed by rapid heart rate, loss of breath, sweating/chills, shaking and chest pain, seemingly occurring out of nowhere.

Self-Medicating: You abuse sleeping aids or the medicine that has been proscribed to you. You drink excessively or have sought out illegal drugs to relieve anxiety.

Don't let stress take you over: come up with ways to beat it. If you are experiencing panic attacks, self-medicating, or are severely depressed or suicidal, you should consult your doctor immediately.
